France has officially returned its last two military bases to Senegalese authorities, marking the end of a 65-year military presence in the country.

The handover ceremony in Dakar was overseen by General Mbaye Cissé and French military officials, symbolizing a significant shift in the security partnership between the two nations.

General Cissé however, emphasized the new objectives for strategic autonomy and strengthened collaboration. Before now, the last French base, Camp Geille, which housed around 350 soldiers, had been operational since Senegal’s independence in 1969 and is now fully under Senegalese control, completing the phased withdrawal of French military installations since March of last year.
