President Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from UNESCO, citing its promotion of divisive cultural and social causes that conflict with American policies.

This will be the third time the U.S. has left UNESCO, with the move set to take effect at the end of December 2026.

While UNESCO officials had anticipated the withdrawal following a review ordered by the Trump administration earlier this year, the U.S. has previously exited UNESCO in 2017 over perceived anti-Israel bias and had also withdrawn in 1984 due to concerns over mismanagement and Soviet influence.
