House of Representatives’ recent proposal to ban public officials from using private healthcare and educational services has sparked debate amid Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with dilapidated public facilities.

Prior now, Citizens have long lamented the poor state of public hospitals and schools, which are often neglected and underfunded, while officials prefer private institutions for themselves and their families, often traveling abroad or sending children abroad for quality services.

With Critics arguing this approach reflects the deterioration of public sectors, and funds meant for development being embezzled, the house has introduced a bill aimed at prohibiting public officials and their families from patronizing private health and education facilities, with hopes that this will mandate government officials to improve public services and restore trust in these institutions.
