Former Minister of Defence, Adetokunbo Kayode has called on local government chairmen across Nigeria to reside in their council areas and actively work from there to help address insecurity and improve local governance. He criticized chairmen who live in state capitals instead of their communities, arguing that this weakens their role in overseeing security and development.

Kayode proposed measures like requiring local government officials to stay in their council areas, work Monday to Friday, and seek approval to visit the state capital. He also suggested creating an Office of Inspector of Local Government Administration under the deputy governor’s office to monitor attendance and performance.

Kayode also emphasized that with increased federal allocations to local governments, part of the funds should be used to strengthen security at the grassroots level, thereby making government more accessible to the people and improving local security.
