Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) has emphasized the need for Nigeria to reduce its dependence on imported raw materials by at least 60% within five years to boost industrial growth.
During the 2025 Nigeria Manufacturing & Equipment Expo, Director-General Prof. Ike-Muonso highlighted that over 70% of manufacturing inputs are imported, leading to economic weaknesses. He however, urged increased use of local resources, strategic coordination, and technological innovation to transform Nigeria’s raw materials into wealth.
So far, the government has introduced measures such as tax incentives for using local inputs, legislation requiring 30% value addition before export, and the commissioning of a local pilot plant complex to showcase homegrown manufacturing capabilities.
Additionally, the Senate passed an amendment mandating raw material processing before export, marking a significant step toward industrialization. The government also committed to commercializing research and fostering industry collaboration through a new inter-ministerial committee.
