Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has proposed a single five-year term for Nigeria’s president during a visit to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.
Obi argued that this would prevent presidents from focusing on re-election and allow them to concentrate on governance, citing South Korea’s model. He vowed to serve only one term if elected in 2027 and emphasized strengthening political parties to ensure they hold more power than elected officials for better governance.
Governor Mohammed urged Obi to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing the need for opposition unity to prioritize Nigeria’s interests over personal or party differences.
