A Qatari official has announced that a draft agreement to end fighting between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the M23 rebel group has been shared with both sides. While the original August 18 deadline for a peace deal was not met, both parties have responded positively and remain willing to continue negotiations.
The talks follow a declaration signed in July in Qatar, which called for negotiations to begin by August 8 and a final agreement by Monday.
Since resuming hostilities in 2021, the M23, backed by Rwanda, has seized territory in eastern DRC, leading to a worsening humanitarian crisis. So far, fighting persists, with recent clashes near Mulamba, and over two million people have been displaced since January.
