South African authorities have arrested six individuals, including conservationist John Hume, in connection with a large rhino horn trafficking ring.

The seven-year investigation uncovered that the group illegally exported nearly 964 rhino horns—about 15% of the southern white rhino population—using fraudulent permits.

The suspects face multiple charges, including fraud, theft, racketeering, and money laundering, and appeared in court with bail granted under strict conditions. Also, Environment Minister Dion George has called the arrests a significant victory in fighting wildlife crime.

The case is ongoing, with the next court date set for December 2025.
