Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake has  ordered the sealing of an illegal gold mining site in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory, to prevent environmental hazards.

This follows a prior operation on August 16, 2025, where another site in the same area was sealed, and 16 suspects were arrested for prosecution. The latest site, discovered on farmland behind CKC in Gwagwalada, was sealed after artisanal miners found a gold vein while digging a soakaway pit.

Mining marshals, under Assistant Commandant John Onoja, have established 24-hour surveillance on both sites.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development is investigating and deploying satellite surveillance technology to curb illegal mining nationwide as Alake urged residents to avoid the affected areas.
