A severe earthquake and multiple aftershocks has struck Afghanistan just before midnight, causing widespread destruction and over 600 deaths.

The quake impacted areas from Kabul to Islamabad, with the deadliest damage in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, where 610 and 12 people were killed respectively, and many more injured.

Rescue efforts are underway, led by Taliban authorities and the UN, who are providing emergency aid. The earthquake’s epicenter was near Jalalabad in Nangarhar, at a shallow depth of eight kilometers, which contributed to the extensive damage.
