Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has mandated all electricity generation companies (GenCos) connected to the national grid to implement Free Governor Control (FGC) across their units by November 30, 2025, to address ongoing grid instability.
Non-compliance will result in penalties, including a 10% charge on the invoice for defaulting units and potential disconnection after 90 days of continuous non-compliance.
The order, effective September 1, 2025, aims to improve grid stability and reliability by ensuring generators can automatically adjust output in response to grid frequency changes. This measure is part of efforts to enforce stricter adherence to the Grid Code and enhance power system security, mandated by Nigeria’s Electricity Act 2023.
