Another earthquake of magnitude 5.5 has struck southeastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, two days after a larger 6.0 quake killed over 1,400 people and injured more than 3,500.

Rescue efforts are hampered by rough terrain, with Taliban authorities air dropping commandos to evacuate the injured. The region continues to face significant destruction, including over 5,000 homes destroyed.

The UN and various countries, including the UK, EU, UAE, India, and China, have pledged aid, but funding remains insufficient. This is the third major earthquake in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power in 2021, worsening the country’s ongoing crises amid aid cuts, economic struggles, and mass returns from neighboring countries.
