Federal Government has assured retired soldiers that their unpaid entitlements will be paid by the weekend, ending their week-long protest at the Ministry of Finance in Abuja.

After a closed-door meeting with officials from the Ministry, Military Pension Board, Nigerian Army Welfare Insurance Scheme, and Security Debarment Allowance department, the veterans, led by Retired Sergeant Ekundayo Alisame, dispersed. The government collected names of those with payment shortfalls and promised to address discrepancies in the payment chart, which incorrectly used a July-to-December range instead of January-to-June for some retirees.

Alisame urged President Tinubu to ensure a transparent system for soldiers to know their entitlements upon enlistment to prevent future delays. The veterans were also informed they are not entitled to a new payment rate. The protest, which began after accusations of diverted funds, was suspended following the government’s commitment to start payments soon.
