Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its two-day strike after a meeting with the Federal Government and Dangote Group officials, which resulted in an agreement to unionize workers at Dangote Refinery.
Recall the union had threatened to strike over management’s refusal to allow unionization and alleged anti-labor practices related to Dangote’s plan to distribute fuel directly using its trucks. Despite initial disruptions, including closed filling stations and panic buying, the parties reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that commits Dangote to allow unionization within two weeks and prevents victimization of workers. The strike was suspended pending further discussions, though during the strike, fuel supply disruptions were felt across Nigeria in various states.
