Director-General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Kelechi Ohiri has announced that over 20 million Nigerians are now enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme, up from 16.8 million in 2023, positioning Nigeria to exceed its 2027 universal health coverage target.
Speaking at an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Health Services in Abuja, Ohiri highlighted NHIA’s efforts to expand coverage and improve service delivery.
Key measures include tariff revisions, updated accreditation standards, sanctions for non-compliant Health Maintenance Organisations and providers, and a one-hour deadline for care authorization codes.
