Britain, Australia, and Canada have recognized a Palestinian state, marking a significant shift in Western foreign policy and prompting strong Israeli condemnation.
Portugal also planned to recognize Palestinian statehood later the same day amid international pressure on Israel over the Gaza conflict, which has caused widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced their countries’ recognition, making them the first G7 nations to do so. This move challenges the traditional view that Palestinian statehood should only be achieved through negotiations with Israel and puts these countries at odds with the U.S. and Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the recognition, calling it a threat to Israel’s existence and a reward for terrorism, as the Gaza crisis worsens.
