Gombe State Government has warned parents and guardians that they risk prosecution and possible jail time if they fail to send their children to school. This was announced during the launch of the 2025/2026 School Enrollment Campaign in Akko LGA.
According to Chairman of the Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Babaji Babadidi , parents who violate Section 19(2) of the SUBEB Amendment Law 2021 could face a fine or up to two months in jail. He emphasized that the government initially provided free education (a “carrot” approach), but will now enforce the law (“stick” approach) if the target of enrolling 400,000 primary school students is not met.
Commissioner for Education, Prof. Aishatu Maigari, highlighted that Gombe has over 700,000 out-of-school children and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to ensuring all children get a quality education and learn vocational skills
