Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, has urged global partners and the private sector to support Nigeria’s efforts to close its widening skills gap and create jobs for millions of young people.
Speaking at the Skills-to-Jobs: Strengthening Workforce Systems for Economic Growth forum during the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, she emphasized that Nigeria’s greatest asset is its people, and equipping them with relevant skills is vital for reducing unemployment and driving inclusive growth.
The event, hosted by the Labour Ministry in partnership with Tech4Dev, Semicolon, and Avaara Partners, brought together government officials, development experts, and business leaders to discuss workforce innovation. Onyejeocha stressed the need to align education with labour market demands and prepare Nigerians for the future of work, particularly in digital and industrial transformation.
