UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced plans to introduce a nationwide digital ID scheme by 2029 to curb illegal migration and simplify access to services. The ID, stored on phones, will be mandatory for proving the right to work but not required to be carried in public. The government says it will also ease applications for licences, welfare, and tax services.
The proposal faces strong opposition from Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, and Reform UK, who warn it could infringe on citizens’ rights and privacy. A petition against ID cards has over 825,000 signatures, though polls suggest majority public support.
A public consultation will be launched to address concerns, especially for vulnerable groups without smartphones.
