‎ Gabon is awaiting the results of its legislative election held on Saturday, which is pivotal for the future parliamentary support of military leader Brice Oligui Nguema. Over 900,000 voters participated in the country’s first elections since a 2023 military coup ousted the Bongo dynasty. The election included voting for 145 parliament members and local councillors, who will indirectly elect senators, mayors, and regional assembly presidents.

The process was mostly peaceful, with some tensions in Ntoum leading to the cancellation of voting in one constituency. Initial results are expected on today Monday. The main contest is between the long-dominant Gabonese Democratic Party and the newly formed Democratic Union of Builders, founded by Oligui Nguema himself. However, a second round of voting is scheduled for October 11 in constituencies where no candidate achieved an outright majority.
