Former Buhari aide Garba Shehu has dismissed ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s claim that Boko Haram once nominated Muhammadu Buhari to mediate peace talks with the Federal Government. Jonathan made the remark at the launch of Gen. Lucky Irabor’s book, Scars.

Shehu insisted the claim was false, noting that Boko Haram leaders, including Abubakar Shekau, consistently opposed and even targeted Buhari, who survived a 2014 bomb attack. He explained that confusion arose from a 2012 statement by a splinter faction, later disowned by Shekau, which mentioned Buhari among possible mediators. Buhari himself denied any involvement at the time.

Shehu accused Jonathan of reviving the rumour for political reasons ahead of 2027, stressing Buhari was never linked to insurgency, while alleging the PDP government exploited the narrative for political gain.
