late-evening fire on Monday has damaged part of the Rivers State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt, starting at the ground floor of the Podium Block, likely due to an electrical fault.
The blaze, which caused significant smoke and panic, was contained through the combined efforts of the Rivers State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, Renaissance Fire Unit, and military personnel. No lives were lost, and the nearby Rivers State Pensions Board was unaffected.
The Head of Service, Dr. Inyinge Brown, praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent fire service rehabilitation, which helped limit the damage. She urged civil servants to adopt safety measures, like unplugging appliances after hours, and assured that the government would quickly refurbish the affected offices.
