‎ National Commissioner at INEC, May Agbamuche-Mbu, has been appointed as acting Chairperson following Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s departure on terminal leave.

Yakubu officially handed over leadership during a stakeholders’ meeting, citing constitutional provisions, and expressed gratitude for his tenure, which spanned over a decade. He highlighted the progress made in electoral technology and reforms, acknowledged ongoing preparations for upcoming elections in Nigeria, and outlined future challenges such as security, logistics, and electoral law reforms.

Yakubu also presented publications documenting his tenure before officially stepping down. His leadership saw significant innovations in electoral processes, including digital systems and voter management, and he emphasized the importance of continued efforts to improve Nigeria’s electoral system.

In the meantime,

President Bola Tinubu has officially accepted Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s resignation as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after he completed his second and final term. Tinubu plans to appoint Yakubu’s successor following a meeting of the Council of State in Abuja, where he will present a list of nominees for the position. Meanwhile, the appointment process involves advice from former Presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan, state governors, and other Council of State members.

Additionally, In recognition of Yakubu’s service, Tinubu has awarded him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger.
