Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has clarified its stance on claims of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria following U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s allegations.

In a statement by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN acknowledged that many Christian communities, especially in the North, have suffered severe attacks, loss of life, and destruction of churches. However, it stressed that its advocacy has always been rooted in justice, peace, and truth, not in inflaming division or hatred.

CAN highlighted its long-standing efforts, including documenting religiously motivated killings, engaging international partners, petitioning the ICC, and collaborating with global Christian organisations.

The body lamented government inaction and delays in addressing attacks, urging urgent and equitable measures to protect Christian communities, bring perpetrators to justice, and prevent further displacement.

Okoh appealed to Christian leaders to act with unity and wisdom, stressing that Nigeria’s healing requires courage, accountability, and rebuilding trust to secure lasting peace.
