Somalia has announced plans to introduce Swahili language teaching in schools and universities as part of its deeper integration into the East African Community (EAC), which it joined in 2024.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Swahili would be taught alongside Somali, Arabic, and English, highlighting its importance for regional trade and cooperation. He urged universities, particularly the Somali National University, to develop Swahili studies.

Information Minister Daud Aweis noted that Swahili traditions are not new to Somalia, recalling Radio Mogadishu’s Swahili programs, while Education Minister Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir said the goal is to make Swahili a language of communication, trade, and learning in the country
