Thousands of displaced Palestinians have started  returning to their devastated homes in Gaza on Friday following a ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, which led to an Israeli military withdrawal and a halt to weeks of intense fighting.

According to Reuters, large crowds moved north on foot along Gaza’s coastal road toward Gaza City, which had recently faced one of Israel’s largest offensives.

In Khan Younis, Gaza’s second-largest city, returnees found widespread devastation, walking quietly through the ruins of what was once a bustling urban area.
