Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has began a two-week warning strike from midnight on October 13, 2025, after the expiration of a 14-day notice. The strike was announced by ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna, citing insufficient progress in negotiations with the Federal Government over issues like welfare, funding, and the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
Despite government efforts, including the release of funds for allowances and plans for further funding in the 2025 budget, ASUU rejected the latest government proposal because it did not meet their demands. Key issues include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, unpaid salaries, university revitalization, victimization of lecturers, arrears, and deduction releases.
The union’s leadership indicated efforts to present their own proposals, but previous government outreach was refused by ASUU leadership.
