In Madagascar, military leader Colonel Michael Randrianirina has announced that the armed forces are taking control of the country amid ongoing political crisis.

This is coming after a parliamentary vote to impeach President Andry Rajoelina, who has reportedly fled the country.

Randrianirina stated that the government structures are being dissolved to restore democracy, and outlined a transitional plan including a joint presidency and judicial reforms. The power shift comes after weeks of mass protests by Gen Z demonstrators, with Randrianirina’s troops joining the protests and Rajoelina going into hiding.
