Madagascar’s new military-installed president, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, has appointed Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, a private sector leader and former Bank chairman, as prime minister, promising a return to civilian rule after last week’s military takeover.
Randrianirina assumed power after ex-president Andry Rajoelina was impeached and fled the country amid mass protests over power cuts and government mismanagement.
The new president said the appointment “scrupulously followed the Constitution” and vowed to form an inclusive civilian government while preparing for new elections.
