Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has begun serving a five-year prison sentence at La Santé Prison in Paris after being convicted of illegally financing his 2007 campaign with Libyan funds.
France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced that two police officers will be stationed in adjacent cells to Sarkozy throughout his incarceration to ensure his safety, citing potential threats due to his former presidential status.
Sarkozy is being held in the isolation unit, where inmates are kept in single cells and separated during outdoor time to prevent contact with others.
The arrangement has drawn criticism from prison guard unions, who argue that the presence of police inside the prison is unnecessary and undermines prison staff
