Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has won a fourth term in office, securing a landslide 89.77% of the vote in an election marked by tension, violence, and opposition boycotts, according to the electoral commission.

Nearly nine million Ivorians were eligible to vote on Saturday, but turnout was 50.1%, with Ouattara dominating his northern strongholds and even leading in some opposition areas, despite low participation there.

His main challengers — former president Laurent Gbagbo and ex–Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam — were barred from contesting, triggering opposition calls to boycott the polls and later rejecting the election’s legitimacy, demanding a rerun.
