House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria to provide cassava farmers with easy access to short-term loans to boost food security and strengthen the agricultural value chain. The lawmakers also called on President Bola Tinubu to revive the defunct Presidential Committee on Cassava Initiative to improve farmers’ welfare and promote export competitiveness.

The motion, sponsored by Hon. Canice Nwachukwu (APC, Imo), highlighted cassava’s economic importance, noting its diverse uses in food, livestock feed, pharmaceuticals, and industry. Nwachukwu said that access to credit and modern processing equipment would increase productivity, income, and food quality.

The House also directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to train farmers on modern cassava production and packaging, while committees on Agriculture and Legislative Compliance will monitor implementation and report back within four weeks.
