‎ Moroccans are celebrating the UN Security Council’s strong endorsement of their plan to maintain sovereignty over Western Sahara, despite a divided vote.

The UN resolution supports the idea of genuine autonomy for the territory under Moroccan control as the most feasible solution to the long-standing dispute, which has persisted since Spain’s withdrawal in 1975.

Morocco’s King Mohamed VI (6th) has welcomed the support and called for dialogue with Algeria’s President. The resolution urges negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy plan, which is favored by most European Union countries and several African nations, but does not include a referendum for independence—a stance opposed by the Polisario Front and its allies. Additionally, the UN further renewed its peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara for another year.
