‎ Government of Angola has announced that it will posthumously honour Nigeria’s late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed (GRM), with a national Class of Honour Medal as part of activities marking Angola’s 50th Independence Anniversary. The recognition, conveyed in a letter from Angola’s Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. José Bamoquina Zau, on behalf of President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço (JGL), acknowledges Muhammed’s crucial role in supporting Angola’s liberation struggle.

The late GRM, who ruled Nigeria between July 1975 and February 1976, is being honoured for his decisive backing of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) during the country’s fight for independence. In 1975, he formally recognised the MPLA government despite pressure from Western powers opposed to the movement.

According to the Angolan government, Nigeria’s stance under Muhammed’s leadership helped strengthen African solidarity and weaken apartheid South Africa’s (RSA) intervention, paving the way for Angola’s independence on November 11, 1975
