Abia State Government has paid over ₦20 million in compensation to victims of a billboard collapse that occurred on May 28, 2025, near Salad Market in Aba, which killed a tricyclist and injured several others. Following the incident, Governor Alex Otti directed the government to cover all medical bills and ensure safety compliance across the state’s billboards through the Abia State Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSAA).
During a cheque presentation at the Government House, Umuahia, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe, explained that nine people received payments through ABSAA.
The widow of the deceased tricyclist, Chioma Destiny, was given a total of ₦9.6 million — ₦8 million for business support and ₦1.6 million for her husband’s damaged tricycle, which will also be returned to her. Five other tricyclists received ₦1.6 million each, while two affected shop owners got ₦500,000 each
