Eswatini has confirmed for the first time that it received $5.1 million from the U.S. in exchange for accepting third-country deportees, amid criticism from human rights groups.
While this deal, linked to Trump’s immigration crackdown, is secretive and has been challenged in court for potentially being unconstitutional, the funds is said to have been directed to the National Disaster Management Agency but have not been officially allocated for use.
So far, at least 15 deportees have been sent to Eswatini, with plans for up to 160; most are detained, prompting legal challenges from civil society.
