Tanzania has canceled its planned independence day celebrations on December 9, urging the funds be redirected to rebuild infrastructure damaged during recent election unrest. The move follows calls from opposition groups for protests over alleged mass killings after the disputed October 29 general election. President Samia Suluhu Hassan won with 98% of the vote amid widespread rejection and accusations of election rigging. Opposition leaders and thousands of protesters have faced crackdowns, with claims of hundreds killed—though the government has not confirmed the death toll. Prime Minister Nchemba advised Tanzanians to avoid violence and pursue political dialogue to prevent further unrest.
