Canada has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism and revoked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) as a designated terrorist entity, aligning with similar recent actions by the UK and the US.
The decision follows HTS’s overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad last December and the group’s takeover of government under its new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, who has been attempting to project a more moderate image.
Canada’s foreign ministry said the moves support efforts by Syria’s transitional government to improve stability, but stressed that they were made carefully. Although sanctions were eased, Canada will maintain sanctions on 56 Syrian individuals, including former Assad officials and members of the Assad family.
