Federal Government has unveiled Nigeria’s first National Policy on Drug and Substance Abuse in Schools, aimed at curbing rising drug use in secondary and tertiary institutions.

Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, who launched the document in Abuja, said the new policy framework prioritises 80% implementation and 20% policy development, with states expected to drive execution while the Federal Government provides technical support. The initiative includes curriculum revisions to add drug-prevention lessons, compulsory drug-integrity testing in higher institutions, nationwide awareness campaigns, and a new Substance Use Prevention Unit.

The government also introduced a strengthened National Teachers’ Policy, expanded digital teacher training, and renewed efforts to ensure all public-school teachers are professionally licensed
