Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has assured Nigerians that the proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police includes safeguards to prevent governors from abusing the system for political purposes.

Speaking at the National Security Roundtable in Abuja, Abbas said the bill provides for national oversight, constitutional checks, judicial review, and legislative approval of state police commissioners. He added that the Federal Police would retain responsibility for terrorism, border security, federal offences, and the FCT.

The Speaker advocated a phased implementation of state policing, stressing that only states with the financial capacity to sustain police services should establish them.
