Mexico has formally asked U.S. state attorneys general and the U.S. Department of Justice to launch criminal investigations into the deaths of Mexican immigrants who died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody or during enforcement operations.
The request follows the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant, by an ICE agent in Houston. Mexican authorities say 17 Mexican nationals have died since President Donald Trump’s second term began—14 in ICE custody and three during enforcement raids.
Mexico has also issued warning letters to U.S. detention centres, demanding improved medical care and adherence to human rights standards, while signalling possible civil lawsuits against facility operators. The government has further appealed to the United Nations to examine whether the deaths violate international human rights obligations.
