UN report has placed Africa as the continent with the highest number of people facing hunger. The annual report on food security and nutrition, compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and four other UN agencies, revealed that hunger affected 309 million Africans in 2025, representing 20 percent of the continent’s population.
This surpasses Asia, where 292 million people, or six percent, experience hunger. While global hunger has slightly decreased from 8.6 percent in 2022 to 7.8 percent in 2025, progress has been uneven, with Africa experiencing rising undernourishment since 2017.
The report highlighted severe climate shocks, conflicts, and economic challenges, noting that two-thirds of Africans cannot afford a healthy diet more than double the rate in Asia and further called for urgent policy actions to transform the food sector and address these issues.
