South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has scored a legal victory today Friday when the Western Cape High Court ruled in his favor to temporarily halt impeachment proceedings against him. The court’s decision allows Ramaphosa to review a 2022 report that suggested he may have committed violations related to a 2020 theft of $580,000 from his farm, which he denies involving any wrongdoing.
The impeachment process was initiated after allegations that Ramaphosa concealed the theft and undeclared foreign currency, which he claims came from the sale of buffaloes. The court’s ruling pauses the proceedings until a September hearing, when Ramaphosa will seek to overturn the report.
