Former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has defended his commercial partnership with a Russian brand amid speculation linking him with the vacant Italy national team coaching position.

Pirlo said the agreement, which began during his coaching spell in the United Arab Emirates, was purely commercial and sporting and had no political meaning. The 2006 World Cup winner said he has always respected the laws and contractual obligations of the countries where he has worked.

Pirlo also expressed disappointment that the partnership had become a public controversy, stressing that his love for Italy does not depend on whether he becomes the national team’s head coach.
