Malawi had delivered a historic upset on Tuesday as they defeated Nigeria 3-2 in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations debut match, marking one of the biggest surprises in tournament history.
The match took place in Morocco, with Malawi’s Flames showing resilience and tactical discipline to take an early lead through Temwa Chawinga, followed by her sister, captain Tabitha Chawinga, who extended their advantage.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons mounted a late rally, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade scoring from a penalty in stoppage time and substitute Uchenna Kanu adding another, but it was not enough to overturn Malawi’s lead. Malawi’s victory not only stunned Africa’s most successful women’s team but also significantly boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage, while Nigeria faces the challenge of bouncing back in their next group game.
