United States has announced that starting August 1, 2026, routine visa processing will cease at its embassy in Abuja and 24 other diplomatic missions across Africa, as part of a broader restructuring of its overseas consular operations.
The US Department of State explained that the move aims to centralize visa services in regional hubs to improve national security, reduce costs, and ensure consistent visa screening and adjudication.
In a statement, the department emphasized that this reorganization aligns with the Trump administration’s priorities of prioritizing America’s security and efficiency. The affected diplomatic posts include locations such as Asmara, Bamako, Banjul, and others, but the department clarified that embassies will continue to provide other consular services and that issued visas remain valid.
