Federal Government has officially set 16 years as the minimum age for admission into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, effective immediately.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this during the 2025 Policy Meeting of JAMB, emphasizing that the age requirement is non-negotiable and strictly enforceable.
Institutions must adhere to this policy, with exceptions allowed only in rare, justified cases for gifted or accelerated students. The government further warned against manipulating age records and will sanction those found guilty of admission fraud. This policy revision follows previous efforts to raise the minimum admission age from 18 to 16, after facing criticism.
