Senegal has canceled Akon’s $6 billion plan to build “Akon City” on its Atlantic coast due to years of inaction and missed payments. Launched in 2020, the project aimed to create a tech-driven, solar-powered smart city but failed to progress, leading the government to reclaim most of the land.
Instead, Senegal plans to develop a scaled-down, state-backed tourism project in the same area with a budget of around $1.2 billion, which could create up to 15,000 jobs.
Akon will retain a small portion of the land, but the original vision has largely been abandoned after limited development efforts.
