Ethiopia has inaugurated Africa’s largest dam, the Grand Renaissance Dam, to boost the economy, reduce blackouts, and support electric vehicle development, as the country has banned gasoline vehicle imports.
The nearly $5 billion, 5,000-megawatt dam, located near the Sudan border along the Nile, is set to double Ethiopia’s electricity capacity.
So far, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called it a significant achievement showcasing African capability. While Several African leaders attended the ceremony, with many expressing interest in importing Ethiopian power; for example, South Sudan plans to sign an agreement to benefit hospitals and schools, also Kenya aims to purchase more electricity to address its own deficits. The project aligns with the African Union’s goal of continental energy connectivity.
