New National President of ASUU Prof Christopher Piwuna has vowed to continue advocating for university autonomy, academic freedom, and better working conditions for lecturers during a reception for his predecessor, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
Piwuna emphasized that strikes remain a universal tool for ASUU but would only be used if the government fails to honor agreements. He noted ongoing engagements with President Bola Tinubu’s administration to resolve ASUU’s demands.
Osodeke, honored at the event, highlighted ASUU’s resilience against challenges under former President Muhammadu Buhari and ex-Labour Minister Chris Ngige, which prevented the collapse of public universities. He credited ASUU’s efforts for removing universities from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS )payroll and securing professors’ retirement benefits, while lamenting the “Japa” migration of academics due to poor treatment.
